Kenyan students explore latest advancement during public tour at Luigi Broglio Malindi Space Centre

Today, students from Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (DeKUT) tours the Luigi Broglio Malindi Space Centre (LBMSC) during an industrial visit to explorfe innovations and advancements in space science and technology.

The Space centre is jointly managed by the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the Kenya Space Agency (KSA). The facility is used for telemetry, tracking and command services for launch vehicles and data acquisition from satellites.

The Space Center Luigi Broglio, located on a remote beach in Malindi, is an important place in the history of Italy and Kenya.

Between 1967 and 1988, about 27 launches, were successfully carried out at the Malindi Space Centre.

Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (or DeKUT) is a public, coeducational technological university in Nyeri, Kenya. It is one of 22 public universities in Kenya, having been a constituent college of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology since the year 2007 until it was chartered to become a fully fledged public university on 14 December 2012.

The team was received by Dr Sara Rossi, the Italian Space Agency (ASI) Manager in charge of the Base, together with the on-site team from the Kenya Space Agency (KSA).

The tour included a visit to the Space Museum, where the students explored exhibits highlighting technological evolution, innovation, and the miniaturization of electronic systems. The tour concluded with a visit to the Operations & Control Area, where the students gained first-hand insight into the Tracking, Telemetry and Command (TT&C) services offered at the facility.

The visit reflects LBMSC’s ongoing efforts to support the development of future space professionals in the country and advance Kenya’s position in the global space sector.

The collaboration between the Dedan Kimathi University of Technology in Kenya and Luigi Broglio Malindi Space Centre (LBMSC) will driven remarkable growth in space technological research contributions.
