Turkey’s Uzay set to completed Turksat 6A satellite in 2012, announces test of assembly and integration

The Thermal Structural Qualification Model (IYYM) assembly and intergration activities of the İMECE Satellite developed by our Institute were completed at the Space Systems Integration and Test Center (USET) located in TUSAŞ facilities.

6 Turksat, Turkey’s domestic and our capabilities in this area will be developed as the first communications satellite project further aims to bring forward. Starting his career in 1994, followed by Turksat Turksat 1B and 1C, 2A, 3A and 4A satellite since the Turkey provide services in this area. However, these satellites were obtained from foreign companies. In the TURKSAT 6A project, it is developing the national communication satellite platform together with the project partners TUSAŞ, ASELSAN and CTECH companies, taking advantage of the experience gained in TÜBİTAK UZAY, RASAT and GÖKTÜRK-2 projects.

TURKSAT 6A Project started on 15 December 2014. The total duration of the project is planned as 60 months. In addition to the flight model that will serve in orbit in the project, additional models are being developed at system level to be used in ground tests.

The TURKSAT 6A Project is funded by TÜBİTAK and the “Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications”. TÜRKSAT A.Ş. will become the operator and owner of the satellite after successful orbit commissioning.

At the meeting hosted by Industry and Technology Minister Mustafa Varank and Deputy Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır, the latest status of domestic and national satellite projects carried out by our Institute was discussed.

The Turkish Aerospace Industry (TAI) meeting was attended by Minister of National Defense Hulusi Akar, Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Adil Karaismailoğlu, Presidency Defense Industry President Prof. Dr. Ismail Demir, Head of the Presidential Office Ali Taha Digital Transformation Coach, Turkey Serdar Space Agency Chairman Huseyin Yildirim, President of TUBITAK Prof. Dr. Hasan Mandal, TUSAŞ General Manager Assoc. Dr. Temel Kotil, ASELSAN Chairman of the Board and General Manager Prof. Dr. Haluk Güngör, TÜRKSAT A.Ş. General Manager Cenk Şen and representatives of other institutions and organizations attended.

Our Institute Director Assoc. Dr. Our Deputy Manager Dr. Alime Özyıldırım, IMECE Satellite Project Project Manager Emir Serdar Aras, TÜRKSAT 6A Project Project Manager Dr. Cevher Levent Ertürk and Technical Leader İbrahim Gümüş and our employees from both project teams attended.

Varank, Akar and Karaismailoğlu, who made examinations in the area where the IMECE Thermal Structural Competence Model assembly and integration activities were carried out, completed the final assembly of our İMECE Satellite.

Within the scope of the project, IYYM model assembly integration activities started in January 2020 and were successfully completed in a short period of 4 months despite the epidemic conditions we are in. Thermal Structural Capability Model will be subjected to rigorous environmental tests for 3 months after this stage and its compatibility with space conditions will be tested.

With the IMECE Project, which started in January 2017, it is aimed to develop the sub-meter resolution IMECE Earth Observation Satellite to meet the military and civilian high-resolution image needs of our country. With the use of the sub-meter camera, which has been developed using domestic and national resources to the maximum, on the satellite platform, an important step will be taken towards meeting the civil and military high-resolution image needs of our country with domestic resources.

In project scope; In addition to High Definition Electro-Optical Camera, critical equipment, software and related technologies are being developed.

Within the scope of the visit, under the leadership of TÜBİTAK UZAY, with the participation of TUSAŞ, ASELSAN and CTECH companies, the Engineering Model and Flight Model activities of our country’s first nationally developed Communication Satellite TÜRKSAT 6A were seen on site and information was received. With the TÜRKSAT 6A Project, in addition to meeting the operational needs of the end user TÜRKSAT A.Ş., a space history will be added to many subsystems on the satellite and these subsystems will form the infrastructure of national communication satellites.

IMECE Satellite Systems Infrastructure Project, which was included in the 2013 investment program of the Ministry of Development with the number 2013K120790;
With the experience of BİLSAT, RASAT and GÖKTÜRK-2, it aims to establish the necessary infrastructure for the development of satellite subsystems in the country that can be used in «Sub-Meter Satellites».

Within the scope of the project, the following infrastructure will be developed within TÜBİTAK UZAY;

  •  Hyperspectral Satellite Camera Infrastructure
  •  Electro Optical Satellite Camera Infrastructure
  •  Communication System Infrastructure
  •  Yıldızizler Infrastructure
  •  Solar Sensor Substructure
  •  Reaction Wheel Substructure
  •  New Generation Flight Computer Infrastructure
