Rapid urbanization: Two thirds of us will live in a city

In just over a decade the world population grew by 1 billion people or roughly the combined population of the United States, Indonesia, Brazil and Pakistan, the four most populous countries after China and India. In fifteen years’ time the world will have grown by another billion. And by then, in 2030, two thirds of us live in cities. While megacities are an important driver of economic growth, they also face increasing problems: Pollution, poor sanitation, slum housing, bad traffic, increased flooding, growing insecurity to name a few. Especially in emerging countries.

The Human Cities Coalition (HCC) is the Dutch public-private partnership of organizations from business, government, NGOs and academia, including Faculty ITC of the University of Twente, committed to make cities and human settlements more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

With AkzoNobel as our founding partner, the Human Cities Coalition has 150+ stakeholders and 20 contributing partners dedicated to achieving SDG11 and the New Urban Agenda. They do so by building sustainable business cases for challenges in the slums of Jakarta and Manila. HCC takes a human-centered approach and combines the power of local communities with the interests of the private, public and financial sector to build viable solutions for flooding, pollution, sanitation, drinking water, waste and more.
