Diana Morant: “The Spanish space sector is helping to consolidate the economic growth of our country”

The Minister of Science, Innovation and Universities, Diana Morant , highlighted this Thursday that “the Spanish space sector is contributing to consolidating the economic growth of our country. For every euro we invest in the space sector, we generate up to 4 euros for our country’s economy,” she stressed.

“President Pedro Sánchez has defined today that the Spanish economy is going like a rocket and one of the sectors that is being given a historic boost is the space sector,” said Morant.

In this sense, he has highlighted that “this Government has committed to the space sector like never before in the history of our country because it is a strategic industry that directly impacts people’s quality of life.”

“We have taken a qualitative leap in this sector to increase our strategic autonomy in essential services for our daily lives,” he maintained.

The minister has assured this after the first working meeting she held with the new director of the Spanish Space Agency (AEE), Juan Carlos Cortés , appointed yesterday by the Governing Council of the AEE.

“We are preparing technological calls for this year for an amount of 50 million euros”

During her speech, the minister explained that the AEE works on industrial technological training in the space sector. “We are preparing technological calls for this year for an amount of 50 million euros, financed with the fee that Spain pays within the ESA,” she detailed.

“These programs will provide scientific-technological training for the space sector as a whole, which will allow us to join and move up the value chain of space missions,” he added.

Call for the constitution of new BIC Centers

In addition, he has reported that the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, through the AEE, “will publish throughout this year a call for the constitution of new ESA BIC Centers.”

“The great objective of the AEE is to maintain the leadership that Spain has within the EU as a key actor to achieve the future of space”

The minister also recalled that “Spain occupies the fourth leadership position in the space sector in the European Union” and pointed out that “the great objective of the AEE is to maintain this leadership of our country as a key actor to achieve the future of space.” in first person”.

“For this, we need three instruments. First, the development of the Spanish Space Strategy, which will receive the necessary boost with the new director so that it sees the light and is approved. Second, approve our country’s space policy, for the first time. And, as a third milestone, the approval of a Spanish Space Law, in parallel to the European one,” he stated.

Cortés: “The AEE is going to strengthen Spain’s position in space”

For his part, the new director of the AEE has referred to the space field as “a strategic sector, of added value and growing importance.” “The AEE is going to strengthen Spain’s position in space by coordinating the entire value chain in this sector, which includes science, technology, innovation and industry,” he said.

“We want to maximize for society the benefits derived from institutional investment in space matters, which implies strengthening applications and security elements,” he highlighted.
