The Defence Space Administration announces the appointment of AVM LI Oluwatoyin as the new Chief of Defence Space Administration replacing the erstwhile Chief of Defence Space Administration, CDSA Air Vice Marshal (AVM) AA Shinkafi
As Nigeria’s Defence Space Command, the Defence Space Administration DSA was established tp facilitate and implement the Defence and security aspects of the National Space Policy and Programmes 2001 for the enhancement of national security and development.
Established on 9 October 2014 under the DSA Act 2016, the Defense Space Administration primary responsibility is to harnesses space products and services to aid the Nigerian military and other security agencies in tackling the security challenges faced by the country.
Defence Space Administration (DSA) was established under the DSA Act 2016 backed by the National Assembly; and states that the position of the Chief of Defence Space Administration (CDSA) is rotational across the Tri-services.
This is in recognition of space as a force multiplier. Nigeria as a responsible member of the international community intends to pursue its legitimate ambition in space for security, national development and peaceful purposes for the advancement of humanity. This is in line with the provisions of the United Nations Committee for the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS) Develop and operate military Space Technologies.
Based on the Act, the Office of the Chief of Defense Space Administration DSA will be occupied by an Officer, not below the rank of a serving Major General or its equivalent whose appointment and removal from office shall be in accordance with Military Posting, on the nomination of the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and Council recommendation to Mr President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for approval.
The Chief must be knowledgeable in Space Science and have demonstrated experience in Engineering, and Information Technology and have executive control over the Military Security and Civilian Staff of the Administration.
The mantle of leadership was handed over by Air Vice Marshal (AVM) AA Shinkafi to AVM Lanre Ibrahim Oluwatoyin on the 9th of September 2024 as the 7th CDSA
The Handing and Taking Over Ceremony commenced with a closed-door briefing of the incoming CDSA, AVM LI Oluwatoyin by the outgoing CDSA, and the DSA Management team in the CDSA’s Office. The ceremony, which was then carried to the General Irabor hall, had the entire staff Administration waiting for the CDSA and the outgoing CDSA.
