All eyes on IBC 2017

The last year edition of the International Broadcasting Convention, IBC held at Amsterdam, The Netherland, had once again, provided an industry platform for experts and media managers to share and discuss issues on advanced technologies, business challenges, implementation ideas and effective and innovative solutions that are shaping the global broadcast industry.

The IBC Conference began on September 8, 2016, in Amsterdam while Exhibition follows suite after the inaugural address beginning on 9 September and lasting till 12 September 2016. The event attracted thousands of participants from over 50 countries representing different international organisations. The events provide an opportunity for the broadcast and media industry stakeholders to network, share and experience wide-ranging technologies, advanced solutions and innovative ideas.

Some of industries’ leading equipment manufacturers, system integrators, transmission network integrators, Internet and broadcast service providers, digital system proponents, regulatory agencies and other media players showcased their latest technologies and services at the event. The exhibition was joined by 46 companies representing 14 countries.

This provided a unique opportunity for them to interact, understand and network with representatives from over 50 broadcasters and channel operators across the world, majority of which were representatives from top/senior management.

At the exhibition arena, Aperi, the pioneer in bringing software-based real-time IP media processing to live production and networking, and Barco Silex, leading provider of image and video compression technology in the audiovisual industry, successfully demonstrated industry-first native IP live remote production for live UEFA EURO 2016 quarterfinal match this summer.

Barco Silex provided the VC-2 HQ codec IP core, critical to the 4K remote production from the IBC Centre in Paris Porte de Versailles to the match in Bordeaux – a distance of more than 600 km. Aperi’s native-IP platform performed all functions in real-time software with industry-low latency.

The project for one of Europe’s most significant sports events went from concept to implementation – including integration and testing – in a streamlined six weeks, illustrating the platform’s ability to launch and execute complex workflows easily and in record time.

Barco Silex is one of the leading app partners to join Aperi’s App Partner Program, endorsing Aperi’s software-based live native-IP platform and MFV (Media Function Virtualisation).

“Aperi has succeeded in developing an open, versatile and robust software ecosystem on their A1105 platform that allows for fast, high-quality new function integration and market deployment,” said Thierry Watteyne, CEO at Barco Silex. “This is a major accomplishment that represents a significant development with far-reaching implications for our industry.”

“Barco Silex is a leader in high-quality video codec IP cores backed by a highly professional team,” said Joop Janssen, CEO at Aperi. “The 4K/VC-2 HQ mezzanine compression solution gave an impressive visual lossless quality at 4:1 compression rates that was critical to this project.”

The approach and commitment of the two companies mirrored each other, producing an effective partnership and a great result for the EURO 2016, despite long distances and different time zones. “Historically you would develop specific hardware cards to offer the same groundbreaking functionality and it takes at least a year to develop,” added Janssen. “We did it in weeks not months or years. That’s the power of great, open software with an IP-centric core architecture.”

During the event, Linius Technologies Limited and Digisoft.tv demonstrated Linius’ patented Video Virtualization Engine™ software integrated with Digisoft’s Iris Workflow software for Cable TV operators. This joint effort, for the first time, enable Cable TV companies to provide the kind of individually targeted ads that the world has grown accustomed to seeing on the Internet.

Mr Chris Richardson, Chief Executive Officer of Linius, said:  “Imagine a 13 year-old girl and a 40 year-old man both sit down and play an episode of Top Gear. Instead of both of them seeing a commercial for the local furniture store, the 13 year-old sees an ad for BirdBrain’s Humminbird robotics kit, and the 40-year-old, who has been shopping for vacations in the Maldives, sees an ad for KLM airlines.

Digisoft’s Iris platform allows cable companies to define business rules to enable accurate targeting, while Linius’ Video Virtualization Engine makes it possible to seamlessly integrate the ads with close to zero additional overhead for the cable co.”

When individually targeted ads became available on the Internet, the average value of an ad increased by 2.7 times. Linius and Digisoft look to enable the equivalent multiple for the global cable TV advertising market.
